Linda, I can certainly relate to your home cleanup ( or is it clean out?). My husband and I sold our house in Arlington VA (USA) in October 2005 and downsized to a two bedroom condo in Falls Church VA in preparation for retirement. What an experience, both physically and emotionally.

It took several months to clear out 36 YRS of living on one place -- a home where I had lived with my first spouse and second spouse, raised two daughters and owned numerous pets. (The guy who bought the house doesn't realize he inherited a "graveyard" where dozens of late lamented gerbils came to rest with full honors by two kids.)

My dear husband did most of the culling because he wasn't as emotionally challenged as I. Week after week the front curb filled up with trash for pickup, 12 vans full of stuff went to Goodwill, and his workshop and welding equipment was moved to our place in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Even after all of that, the firs thing we did after moving into our new condo was to throw out some stuff we shouldn't have moved!

But here's the thing -- we both felt so relieved when this was over! Relieved from all that STUFF! It was and still is a freeing of our souls.

About those books. We felt the same about giving any of them up, but space restrictions made us rethink even that. We gave away many to our local library and sold or gave away others to local used bookstores. We now regularly buy both new and used books and then resell them back again to the used bookstores. We still have a good supply, but feel much better about our recyclying.

BTW, I was semi-retired for a couple of years and was able to work as a consultant part time. I finally retired from PAID work last October. Being on the international board of IABC has helped me through this transition, and I've learned that you never lose the ability to give back.

Hi Linda! This is so exciting and I'm glad you're getting personal -- that's what makes a blog worth reading. So privileged that you've invited me to share your story. I'm cheering for you! I will definitely keep in touch. Keep on writing ... and reading!

What a good looking bunch! Just noticed we're even colour coordinated, black and white. Do you suppose this might be a reflection of who we are?
